Shri CH S S Mallikarjunarao, age 63 years, is a professional banker with more than 37 years of experience.

He started his banking career as a probationary officer in Bank of Maharashtra in 1985. He retired as Managing Director & CEO (MD & CEO) of Punjab National Bank (PNB) in January 2022. During his tenure at PNB since 2019, he successfully completed the amalgamation of Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank of India into PNB in terms of the notification issued by the Government of India. After amalgamation, PNB emerged as the second largest public sector bank with more than 10,000 branches and more than 1 lac workforce.

During this period, Shri Rao also served as Non-Executive Chairman of 1) PNB International Ltd, London and PNB Housing Finance Ltd, and as Nominee Director on the Boards of PNB Metlife Ltd, Universal Sompo Insurance Ltd, and Oriental Insurance Co Ltd. He also held the position as Dy Chairman of Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) for a period of two years.

Prior to assuming the position of MD & CEO of PNB, he was MD & CEO of Allahabad Bank from 2018 to 2019. During this period, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) removed the Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) imposed on the Bank in 2017, based on satisfactory performance of the Bank. Before this assignment, shri Rao served as Executive Director of Syndicate Bank since 2016.

Shri Rao has handled various responsibilities in Oriental Bank of Commerce in the rank of General Manager as Chief Financial Officer, Chief Information Officer (Head of Information Technology), Head of Digital Banking and Chief Risk Officer etc.

In Career spanning more than 37 years Shri Rao has gained experience and expertise in functional areas viz. Risk Management, Credit, Treasury operations, Information Technology, Digital Banking, Finance, Business Management and Insurance.

Shri Rao holds a Bachelor degree in Science (B Sc) with Maths, Physics & Chemistry and in general laws (LLB) and is a Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB).

Shri Rao attended various programs such as Executive Development Program (EDP) / Leadership Development Program (LDP) / Executive Program (EP) viz.,
1) EDP @ Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad.
2) LDP @ Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), Hyderabad.
3) EP on Predictive Analytics @ Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium.
4) EP on Information Systems Security and Assurance @ University of Buffalo, USA.

Current engagements of Shri Rao include as,
a) Independent Director on the Board of Axis Bank.
b) Director on the Board of Indian Financial Technology and Allied Services (wholly owned subsidiary of RBI).
c) Independent Director on the Board of National Urban Cooperative Finance and Development Corporation (NUCFDC).

Shri Ch. S.S. Mallikarjuna Rao has been appointed as Non-official Independent Director on the Board of NPCIL w.e.f. 16th April 2025.
