Shri Nitin R. Choudhary
Director (HR)

Shri Nitin R. Choudhary is currently serving as Outstanding Scientist and Director (Human Resources) at Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), with effect from May 1, 2026. He previously held the position of Executive Director (Commercial) at NPCIL from November 2022 to April 2026 and exercised the responsibilities of Executive Director (Finance) from October 2016 to November 2022. He has also been serving as Nominee Director on the Board of Uranium Corporation of India Limited since May 6, 2026.

Shri Choudhary has also served as a Director on the Board of L&T Special Steels and Heavy Forgings Pvt. Ltd. (formerly L&T Special Heavy Forgings Pvt. Ltd.) for a period of eight years from March 2017 to February 2025, contributing to strategic and governance aspects of the organisation.

Shri Choudhary graduated in Civil Engineering from VJTI, Mumbai, in 1991, securing the Second Rank in the university, with specialization in Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering. He joined NPCIL in November 1991 and has since been associated with the organisation in various technical and financial capacities.

In pursuit of interdisciplinary excellence, he completed a Post Graduate Programme in Management of Business Finance (MBA) from Indian Institute of Finance (1992–94). He further qualified as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) from Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India in 1998, securing an All India Rank of 6.

In order to widen horizons of expertise in Corporate field, he pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from University of Mumbai in 2009 and subsequently completed his Master of Laws (LL.M. Professional) from Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai in 2021.

Shri Choudhary has a keen interest in dispute resolution mechanisms and pursuing the same, he successfully cleared the Associate and Membership examinations of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (London) in August 2025 and February 2026 respectively, and is presently a Member (MCIArb) since February 2026. He is currently pursuing Fellowship of the same institute with specialization in International Commercial Arbitration.

Professionally, Shri Choudhary commenced his career in the field of seismic analysis (1991–1996), contributing to response spectrum analysis for nuclear power projects. In April 1996, he transitioned to the Corporate Finance domain of NPCIL, where he has since held positions of increasing responsibility, including Manager, Senior Manager, Deputy General Manager, Additional General Manager, General Manager, Associate Director, and Executive Director.

Over the years, he has developed extensive experience across a wide spectrum of financial and commercial functions, including:

  • Structuring and finalisation of Power Purchase Agreements with distribution companies;
  • Determination of tariff for nuclear power generation;
  • Resource mobilisation through term loans and bonds for project financing;
  • Financial appraisal and evaluation of new nuclear projects;
  • Commercial and financial assessment of contracts and associated claims;
  • Representation of NPCIL before regulatory and judicial forums such as the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL), and the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.

 

He has been a member of two Tariff Committees constituted by the Department of Atomic Energy, chaired by eminent scientists Dr. M. R. Srinivasan (2015) and Dr. Anil Kakodkar (2021). In these roles, he contributed significantly to policy-level deliberations. Notably, he conceptualised and introduced an innovative approach of variable Return on Equity (RoE) within tariff structures, aimed at balancing investor returns while mitigating tariff front-loading, thereby enhancing the long-term economic perception of nuclear power.
